This 4th edition of the Big Bug Shootout, held at Piedmont Dragway, was a successful one! The weather was just perfect for a wonderful day with our VW family!
This event started out with some test sessions on Saturday night. The ECPRA Pro Stocks came out early to run 2 rounds of Qualifying, but they ran one session and decided that they wouldn't run the second one until Sunday. Although, many VWs including some Pro Stocks still ran some test sessions that night and gave the crowd just a little of what to expect on show day!
Sunday the swap meet Vendor area started filling up early! As mid morning came around, the parking lot outside the gate was filling up as well as the show and non show area inside the gate! East Coast Sandrails Tommy Fletcher and his extended family of about 40 rails, came out to support the show and have a good time! They set up their own area and set up the tents and starting cooking! What a great way to spend a day at a VW show with all your best buddies and eat some great food!
The show area was filling up with some 70 cars, which is quite a bit more then previous years. Rich Cash and Family usually have their Beautiful show winning Yellow/Purple Beetle out, but this time Rich brought out his 4 Seater Rail Buggy that he is in the process of finishing. It certainly is looking good and the family is looking forward to riding in it. Ed Kenney and Family had the Gorgeous Silver/Blue Chopped top Beetle that they just started showing this year. Each time you see it, there is always just one more thing that has been finished on it! Looking good as always and the family ended up walking away with the Best of Show and Engine award. There certainly was some freshly finished VWs in the show area including David Clodfelter's 69 Beetle and Scott Powell's 72 Karmann Ghia. David's Beetle ended up winning first in class as well as Best Paint and Scott's Ghia won the Best Interior. Many other models were in the show area and congrats to all the show winners! Take a look in the class winners section for full results.
VW power was heating up the track at Noon time with the remaining rounds of Pro Stock Qualifying and the three time runs for the Bracket Racers. A total of 44 racers were in attendance this go around and there certainly was some nail biting action going on by the time the eliminations came around! The Pro Stocks posted some low numbers with Denis Elliot taking the #1 Qualifier with a 6.149. By the time it came to the final round it was Demon Harmon and Denis Elliott. These two are battling for the top position in the ECPRA standings, with only one more race to go, every point counts! Damon ended taking the holeshot win with a .003 rt 6.278 et 112.02 mph to Denis' .127 rt 6.174 110.74mph. Look at the race results for a complete list of the Pro Stock ladder.
In the Bracket section, it certainly was a close call in the Super Pro finals with Clint Woolard and David Grayson. Clint Woolard just barely took the win with a .027rt 7.07di 7.073et 94.85mph to Dave's .060rt 5.20di 5.237et 132.43mph. The Pro Class brought out local Brandon Lopp and West Virgina's Gary Zipperian. Gary's crew was absent this go around, but that didn't stop Gary from taking his first WIN at an SEVWA event! The Sportsman finals brought out The 2007 Champion Johnie Walker and newcomer Wayne Harron. Johnie took to the win, thanks to Wayne's red light! Take a look in the race winners section for numbers from these final runs.
All in all the event was a successful one! The Weather was perfect and we hope that you all had a great time! Next up on the schedule for SEVWA is the Silver Dollar Showdown in Reynolds, Ga on October 5th and then the FINALS at Fast Times at Farmington at Farmington Dragway on October 19th. We thank you for coming out to the event and hope to see you again! Remember we ALWAYS welcome your suggestions and comments, so please send them our way via the forum or by email.
